Tips for Sparkler Safety on July Fourth

The Fourth of July is a terrific time to celebrate our nation’s independence with friends and family. In Florida, fireworks are illegal for consumer use without a special permit. Just because you see firework items for sale doesn’t mean it is legal to purchase, possess or use.

The only fireworks approved for consumer use in the state of Florida are those that fall into the “sparkler” category. The Florida Fire Marshall publishes a full list of legal sparklers each year.

I you choose to celebrate by using fireworks, your BBB has advice to keep you safe and make the holiday enjoyable.

  • Prior to igniting, inspect the area for flammable objects.
  • Keep pets indoors and away from all sparklers.
  • Read all packaging and warning labels.
  • Do not try to alter or combine sparklers, light only one at a time.
  • Do not attempt to re-light even if the sparkler did not work.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher or water hose on-hand for emergencies and a bucket of water for used sparklers.
  • Only purchase sparklers from licensed vendors. Read any contracts or waivers carefully when asked to sign, the wavier protects the store when selling potentially illegal items.
  • Closely supervise sparkler use. Find other ways for young children to participate in July Fourth festivities.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Clean up all sparkler debris and trash immediately. Soak used and “dud” sparklers in bucket of water.
  • Instead of risking your own safety, attend one of the many local Firework shows.
