Ask Gina – VIN Numbers

Q:  Hey Gina, why does my independent insurance agent request a vehicle identification number (VIN) when I apply for a car insurance quote?

A:  Using the VIN, the 17-digit alphanumeric serial number found on the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle, is the easiest way to determine the correct make, model, body style, engine and transmission type for your vehicle.

The VIN is also a helpful tool for identifying other vehicle-specific details and safety features that can provide discounts on your insurance premium.

The insurance company will check your VIN to make sure that the vehicle is not reported as stolen or that the title is salvaged, which means that the vehicle has been declared a total loss in the past.

The State of Florida has insurance requirements that must be met before they will issue licenses or vehicle registration tags. There may be a problem registering your vehicle if the VIN is not entered correctly on your vehicle insurance documents.

While you can get a quote without a VIN, you will be required to provide it to purchase insurance. The more information you provide during the quoting process, the more accurate your quote will be.
